Hopeworks, a program for Camden youth run by Fr. Jeff Putthoff SJ, is now selling its 2009 Camden Street Map. Hopeworks provides technology training to Camden youth in an effort to “create hope for the future, good-paying jobs, business development and educational opportunities for Camden's young people—specifically African-American and Hispanic youth between the ages of 17 and 25 who have dropped out of school.”

Cristo Rey Network Partners with Jesuit Universities

The Cristo Rey Network launched the University Partner Initiative on May 26. Universities participating in the initiative will help the network expand its support for Cristo Rey graduates through scholarships, pre-college summer enrichment and academic support programs, job sponsorship, and professional development conferences.

Boston College, Fordham University, Georgetown University, Loyola University Chicago, and Marquette University are among the program’s founding national partners; Santa Clara University is also a national partner. [Cristo Rey Network]

Dr. Tim Rice, a doctor and professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at Saint Louis University, will make his fourth annual trip to the Congo on June 16 as founder and CEO of a self-sustaining medical clinic there, which he helps manage.

Rice’s clinic takes the idea of a medical mission trip a step further. "When I'm there my goal is not to see as many patients as possible, but to work with local providers to improve the clinic infrastructure and practices . . . so the community gets the care it needs year round, not just for two weeks," Rice said.

More than $10,000 in donations helped Rice get started, and nurse practitioners, church volunteers, a defined scope of practice, and low-cost medications keep his clinic sustainable.
