California Province
Terrence Birkholz, 37, on July 17 in Santa Clara, Calif. He died as a result of complications during surgery shortly before he would have entered the California Province novitiate.
Fr. Robert H. Dailey, 81, on May 24 in Los Gatos, Calif. He served as missionary in China and taught theology at Alma College and the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif., for over 35 years.
Chicago Province
Fr. John J. Kramer, 67, on July 13 in Clarkston, Mich. He taught religion and Latin at Brebeuf Prep in Indianapolis, St. Ignatius Prep in Chicago, and Xavier University in Cincinnati, and served on staff at the Cincinnati Archdiocese's religious education office.
Fr. Walter E. McCarthy, 72, on June 25 in Phoenix. He taught English and religion at St. Xavier High in Cincinnati and at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill., served on staff at the novitiate in Berkley, Mich., and was hospital chaplain in Phoenix.
Fr. Leo J. McKenna, 76, on July 1 in Clarkston, Mich. He taught religion at St. Xavier High in Cincinnati and theology at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill., and was pastor at a number of parishes, including Gesu in Detroit and St. Catherine in Aledo, Ill.
Fr. Gregory J. O'Kelly, 79, on July 16 in Chicago. He taught scripture at West Baden College in Indiana, St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Ill., the Jesuit seminary in Toronto, and Loyola University Chicago.
Detroit Province
Br. Elias Aowad, 70, on June 27 in Pontiac. He served as cook at the Milford novitiate in Ohio and as director of the kitchen at the Detroit provincial residence and at Colombiere College in Clarkston, Mich.
Maryland Province
Fr. Anthony J. Zeits, 82, on May 24 in Darby, Pa. He served as director of buildings and grounds at Wheeling Jesuit College, alumni director at Georgetown University, president and treasurer of St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, and province treasurer.
Missouri Province
Fr. James M. Burke, 74, on June 5 in Spokane, Wash. He taught at the Jesuits' St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., helped start Ministry Training Services in Denver, and served in the Focus on Leadership program at Gonzaga University in Spokane.
Fr. Walter F. Harris, 81, on July 6 in Denver. He was teacher at Creighton Prep in Omaha and at Regis University in Denver, rector at his province's tertianship program, and parish priest at a number of parishes in Kansas and Colorado.
New England Province
Fr. George F. Lawlor, 83, on August 6 in Los Angeles. He served Boston College for over 30 years as professor of biology and education and director of the business school's counseling education program.
Fr. Francis J. Murphy, 86, on May 31 in Boston. He taught at Xavier High School in Concord, Mass., for seven years, at the Jesuit high school in Cranwell, Mass., for eight years, and at Boston College High School for over twenty years.
Fr. John J. Sampey, 86, on May 26 in Weston, Mass. He taught rhetoric and Latin at the Shadowbrook novitiate and at Boston College and taught classics at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he also served in pastoral ministry.
New York Province
Fr. Edward J. Lavin, 66, on June 25 in the Bronx. He taught French and art at Regis High School in New York for over 30 years.
Fr. John J. Jennings, 79, on July 19 in the Bronx. He taught classics at Regis High School, New York; Fordham University, the Bronx; LeMoyne College, Syracuse; and Canisius College, Buffalo; and was associate pastor at St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Cheektowaga, N.Y.
Fr. Charles W. Lehmkuhl, 77, on June 12 in the Bronx. He served as dean of discipline at Xavier High School in New York and taught theology, served as department chairman, and counseled students at Canisius College in Buffalo for over 30 years.
Fr. Joseph F. Maxcy, 81, on July 2 in the Bronx. He taught religion in the Philippines, served as chaplain at LeMoyne College in Syracuse and administrator at Canisius College in Buffalo, and was parish priest and retreat director in New York and New Jersey.
Oregon Province
Fr. John J. Graisy, 72, on July 11 in Tacoma. He served as army chaplain for twenty years in the United States, Vietnam, Germany, and Korea. For the last fifteen years he served in parish ministry in Tacoma.
Fr. Louis A. Sauvain, 77, on July 11 in Spokane. He served as rector at Seattle Prep and served Seattle University for more than 40 years as theology and marriage guidance teacher, student chaplain, and residence hall moderator.
Fr. Terrence S. Shea, 58, on July 17 in Spokane. He taught political science at Seattle University, served as president of Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma and Seattle Prep, and was executive secretary of the Jesuit Conference in Washington, D.C.
Fr. James T. Wilson, 71, on July 14 in Tualatin, Oreg. He served the Jesuit community at Gonzaga University in Spokane and as assistant pastor at a number of parishes, including St. Luke in Woodburn, Oreg., and St. Stanislaus in Lewiston, Idaho.
Wisconsin Province
Fr. Roman A. Bernert, 83, on May 16 in Milwaukee. He was principal at Campion High in Prairie du Chien, Wis., Rockhurst High in Kansas City, and Marquette High in Milwaukee. He served the province office in a number of administrative posts.
Br. Francis T. Jelinek, 75, on July 21 in Omaha. He served in maintenance at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., and was refectorian, buyer, and superintendent of buildings at Creighton University in Omaha.
