Ordination 96
by Br. Darrell Burns, SJ

On June 5, 1546, the Society of Jesus began admitting brothers into its ranks. In commemoration of the 450th anniversary of that event, Company invited Br. Darrell Burns, SJ, chaplain at Loyola Blakefield High in Towson, MD to write an introduction to the photos and biographies of the Jesuits being ordained for service into the Jesuits during the summer of 1996.
As a Jesuit brother I view priesthood in the Society of Jesus as a vital part of my own life. Though I am not ordained--nor will I be--I share the priesthood of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of baptism with those who are. But we as Jesuits share muc h more. We share our fundamental vocation to the Society of Jesus, 'called to be a companion of Jesus as Ignatius was' (32nd General Congregation). We are all Jesuits; we live the same vowed life. We share a common work: to preach the Gospel by living liv es rooted in Gospel values. We share a common goal: to establish the Kingdom of God here on earth. To put it quite simply, we share the common ministry of Jesus Christ.

Many of the Jesuit priests I've come to know have been a source of inspiration for me. Their commitment to the apostolate, their involvement with people, and their generosity with their time and talents have been an example for me. We have worked toget her with various educational institutions in a variety of roles. We support each other not only through our prayers but also through our common vision and common life. I have shared friendship with many priests over these past 33 years that I have been a Jesuit, and those friendships are rooted in the fact that we are fellow Jesuits. We have shared hopes and fears, our accomplishments and struggles as we attempt to live our common Jesuit life. Without priesthood, I would find something lacking in the Soci ety of Jesus; without my close association with priests, I would find something lacking in my own life. I have grown to respect and to love these men, even though we do not always agree.

To you being ordained this summer I say: Remember when you have presided at the table of the Lord you do not stand there alone. You are a Jesuit who is a priest, not a priest who is a Jesuit; as such you stand there united with your brother Jesuits: p riests, brothers, and scholastics. Nurture and cherish friendship within the Society of Jesus and pray for your brothers.

Within the Society of Jesus the life of a priest confirms the vocation of a brother and the life of a brother confirms the vocation of a priest. Priests and brothers, together with scholastics, compose the Society of Jesus. It is our common role to discov er the grandeur of God that fills the earth and to share the grandeur with all those who come into our lives.
