Newcomers

Every year young (and not so young) men decide to become Jesuits and enter novitiates across the country for two years of work, study, and reflection. Here are pictures and short biographies of those who joined this fall.

Scranton

Tim, 29, a Scranton Prep grad, has a BS in marketing from the University of Scranton, where he was a retreat team leader. He's done development work for Catholic high schools in Philadelphia and parish youth ministry. His interests range from music ("I'm an Irish tenor") to travel. (Maryland Province)

Toledo

Raj, 23, with a BA in sociology from Villanova, served in the JVC as a job placement counselor in Detroit. He has worked at a Detroit neighborhood legal services bureau and has done volunteer work at a soup kitchen in Philadelphia and on a reforestation project in the Dominican Republic. Michael Conley
Chicago

Michael, 28, has a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as a financial options trader in London and as assistant registrar at S.t Xavier High School in Cincinnati. He enjoys cooking, travel, and hiking, and he has a particular interest in writing. (Chicago Province)

Springfield, Pa.

Kurt, 22, has a BA in history from Georgetown, where he was active in retreat and campus ministry. He worked for the American Political Science Association and has tutored disadvantaged youths in music. An avid biker and basketball fan, he's also been playing drums since he was nine. James, 30, has a BS in biochem from the University of Scranton and an MD from Georgetown. He did internship at a naval hospital and served aboard the USS Simon Lake in the Mediterranean, which gave him the opportunity to visit the Holy Land. He enjoys classical music, poetry, and track. Spokane

Peter (his nickname), 27, has a BA in liberal studies from California Poly State in San Luis Obispo and worked as a biochemical technician at Genetech, producing pharmaceutical proteins. He worked at a L'Arche community in Mobile for a year and a half. He enjoys reading, baking, and soccer. (California Province)

Edward Hardiman
Silver Spring, Md.

Ed, 27, with BAs in politics and secondary ed from Fairfield University, taught high school history in Westwood, Mass. He spent a year volunteering at a parish in Ecuador and did work toward an MA in pastoral ministry at Boston College. His hobbies include computers, hiking, and reading. (New England Province)

Stuart, 31, is a registered nurse with a BA in anthropology from SUNY in Binghamton. He has worked in critical-care settings, most recently as a hospital nursing supervisor at an Indian Health Service Unit in Arizona. He is a pilot who also enjoys motorcycles, martial arts, and music. (California Province)

Dan, 24, has BAs in history and political science from John Carroll University. As a JVC member in Camden, N.J., he taught gym and coached basketball at a parish. Mark, 31, has a BA in philosophy from St. John's Seminary College in Camarillo, Calif. He worked for five years as an accountant for the University of California Medical Center in Torrance. His academic interests range from linguistics to theology, and he enjoys music. (California Province)

T.J., 26, hsd BAs in political sience and communications from Boston College and a JD from the University of Texas. He's clerked at Houston law firms, studied in Mexico, and taught Spanish and English grammar at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx. His sports are skiing and golf. (New Orleans Province)

New York

Sean, 27, attended Brophy Prep in Phoenix and got a BA in English from Georgetown and an MA in English from Boston College, a subject he taught there and at Arizona State. A former U.S. Senate intern, he loves golf and makes an annual visit to his parents in Ireland. (California Province)

Joe, 26, earned a bachelor's degree in pure and applied science from the Collège Français in Montreal. He has played organ at his parish church and enjoys listening to, composing, teaching, and playing music. He is fluent in French and has lately been taking up Spanish. (California Province)

Kevin, 29, has a BA in government from Georgetown and a JD from the University of Florida. He practiced law with a North Palm Beach, Fla., firm for three years and was social studies teacher, soccer coach, and campus minister at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach. (Maryland Province)

North Canton, Ohio

Matt, 23, with a BA in computer science from Harvard, volunteered as a grade school science teacher in Cambridge, Mass. He served as president of the Harvard-Radcliffe Catholic Student Association. His hobbies include science fiction, surfing the 'net, and camping. (New England Province)

Allen (his nickname), 25 studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and earned a BA in history from the University of North Texas in Menton. He was a tutor for United Way's Adults learn to Read program. He enjoys boating and fishing; his academic interest include Church history. (New Orleans Province)

Steve, 22, with a BA in theology from Creighton University in Omaha, worked five summers as a camp counselor. He's been involved in a number of retreats for youth and spent a year traveling throughout Europe and studying in Rome. He enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with friends. Hadi, 26, has a BA in math from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and an MS in statistics from George Washington in Washington, D.C. He worked as an engineer for Lockheed Martin in Washington, D.C., where he also volunteered time at a soup kitchen. He enjoys photography and volleyball. (Maryland Province)

Stephen, 29, has a BFA from the University of Minnesota and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. He has taught art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and most recently was involved in a mural project in Minneapolis. His other academic interests include literature and philosophy.
