Beginnings: Birth and Conversion

The Loyola crest adorns the outer wall of the family castle in Spain. Recuperating from his battle wound there, Ignatius underwent conversion while reading a life of Christ and the lives of saints. Photographer Fr. Kenneth Overberg, SJ, is professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati.

"Gesu Church is a landmark of my college, Marquette University. It was designed by Henry C. Koch and dedicated in 1894. In 1975 it was designated a Milwaukee landmark. Capturing its architectural beauty best exemplifies the Jesuit tradition at Marquette," says photographer Angie Wolfe, a senior at Marquette who's majoring in visual communications.

The Ignatian ideal of academic excellence is exemplified each year at the Parents' Weekend Honors Convocation at Loyola College in Baltimore. Student Jos‚ Vargas, class of '99, receives the congratulations of his parents, Elida and Danilo. Photographer Bob Stockfield has been doing freelance photography for Loyola College since 1986.

Palm Sunday

Fr. Bob Voss, SJ, walks in a Palm Sunday procession in Victoria, Honduras. "Right before I took this picture he climbed up on a roof with a machete to harvest some palm branches for the procession," says photographer Fr. Mike Harter, SJ, one of the novice directors at the Jesuit novitiate in St. Paul. Fr. Harter worked for ten years in communications, on staff at the Review for Religious, and as an editor at America magazine.

Photographer Michael Sarnacki has taken many pictures of Detroit Province Jesuits and their works. He goes to Sri Lanka this summer to continue work on a photo project on a Buddhist ceremony.

Baby in a Bathtub

Fr. John Quinn, SJ, took this picture while working in hillside barrios surrounding Tijuana. "I helped build the one-room casita in which this baby lived with his mother and nine brothers and sisters," he said. Fr. Quinn, communications coordinator at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, graduated from the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara with an MS in professional photography.
