Fr. J. Robert Barth, SJ
Professor of English, Boston College
Time on the job: 11 years
When he was Boston College's Arts and Sciences dean, Fr. Barth was known to conclude
meetings with poetry readings. As British romantic poets was his field as professor of English,
that is not too surprising. But he has also appeared in college theater productions and was
narrator when the college orchestra performed Aaron Copeland's "Portraits of Lincoln." He has
concluded his term as dean and a sabbatical and goes back to teaching romantic poets this
January.

Time on the job: 6 years
Since 1993 Mr. Majewski has masterminded John Carroll University's imaginative gardens, which
he makes bloom as early and late as winter permits, to the delight of the university community. He
plays shortstop on a softball team and strums guitar with the Outside Jakes, an acoustical trio. He
also teaches gardening for the city and is working toward a BA in history at John Carroll. He and
his wife, Nancy, have five children, ages five to sixteen.
Fr. Stephen Sundborg, SJ
President, Seattle University
Time on the job: 2 years
"I am foremost a priest, and I see my presidency as a form of ministry," says Fr. Sundborg, whose
focus is on high academic standards and helping students develop a strong sense of values. He
constantly reinforces his priority that Seattle University be a university that is "for the students."
Whether addressing students, faculty, or staff, Fr. Sundborg's style is open and forthright. He
taught theology at Seattle and was rector there before becoming Oregon Province's provincial in
1990. A delegate to the Jesuits' 34th general congregation, Fr. Sundborg helped draft the
document on working with laity.
