"What does the Lord require? That you act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God?" --Micah 6:8 In April 1999, students and faculty from Fairfield Prep embarked on their first mission trip to Duran, Ecuador. This is a photo of one family with whom our group walked during the trip. Building personal relationships with families like this one led some of our students to give up their daily bread. By standing in solidarity with their hungry neighbors these students learned firsthand the meaning of Ignatius's Prayer for Generosity.

A bride and her wedding party rush up the steps of St. John's Church at Creighton University in Omaha in early spring. The birds-eye view from the ninth floor of Swanson Residence Hall overlays the colorful bouquet of the bride with the green buds of a tree overhead.

This view of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church on the campus of Gonzaga University in Spokane looks up at what has been known for generations as the "spires." St. Aloysius Gonzaga is the location of Gonzaga Prep's baccalaureate mass as well as many other events.

Fr. Fran Daly, SJ, celebrates the feast of our patron, Francis Xavier, at St. Xavier High. Just as he raises the book above his head before proclaiming the Gospel, a shaft of sunlight comes through the window above and behind him and shines on the book, the Gospel's brilliance illuminating a dark world.

Fr. Dan Rice, SJ, from Athens, Ohio, died in India in 1991 after serving as a missionary to the Santalis of the Sokho Valley. Over the 30 years of Fr. Rice's agricultural and retreat ministry there, he took on the look and dress of a sannyasi, or Hindu holy person. I took this picture at Dan's residence in 1978, when I was a Jesuit novice on "long experiment" working in Calcutta with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity. I remember listening with Fr. Rice to a "Voice of America" radio broadcast announcing the election of a new Polish pope.

This young girl lives in Cienfuegos, a shantytown that grew up around a cigar factory on the outskirts of Santiago, Dominican Republic. She peeks out her front door to greet volunteers from Creighton University's Institute for Latin American Concern Program (ILAC). Students and staff provide medical attention and education to rural villagers in the Dominican Republic; volunteers experience Ignatian spirituality in the context of Third World poverty.
